Supporting the Enhancement of Critical Thinking Skills through Language Teaching

Critical thinking skill is one of the 4Cs along with Communication, Creativity and Collaboration in the 21stcentury education. These four competencies are needed in order to prepare students to face the social life and global workforce. In this regard, the role of teacher is very important to ensure that the students will be ready to enter the millennium era.

Critical thinking and problem solving help students to improve their concentration, their analytical skill and also their thinking process. On top of that, they can be integrated into classroom teaching and learning in all of grade levels and disciplines. On that account, teachers are demanded to develop critical thinking habit and repeatedly demonstrate it in the teaching process, to encourage students to think critically about learning materials and try to connect them with real life situation.

Accordingly, language teachers, for example, are expected to integrate critical thinking skills through activities and tasks given in their classroom. However, the integration between critical thinking and classroom activity is still challenging for many language teachers. Therefore, they need a variety of teaching strategies and techniques prepared to enhance students’ critical thinking skills.

Realising the importance of critical thinking skills, SEAMEO QITEP in Language selects this issue as the theme of the 8th AISOFOLL. In this forum, teachers, lecturers, post graduate students and researchers with interests in foreign language learning and teaching at all levels from SEAMEO and Affiliate Member Countries will be able to discuss and share their experiences, good practices and challenges related to the theme of critical thinking.
